How can I install a previous version of an app on an iOS-device? Before iTunes 12.7 I managed my apps in iTunes and always had backups of previous app-versions. But now iTunes does not longer manage apps.
I need the option of rolling back/downgrade apps, because newer versions of apps may have insufficiencies I hadn’t in the previous versions. Examples for this are running apps that suddenly need login and online, popular call-services that turn into an unusable mess, or blown-up apps that need more resources than my iPhone has.
—— User from Discussion. Apple
To make an iOS app more popular and loved by its users, developers have always been working hard to release its new version. In it, they may fix the bugs existed in older versions, or add some new and funny features, or remove some redundant or unpopular functions, or more.
However, things happen occasionally. You may face some issues like apps keep crashing when using the newest version, probably it is with more annoying bugs, or the previous funny functions have been removed roughly, and so on. And now you just want to downgrade the app to the previous version. But how? Don’t worry, and there will be two practical methods introduced in the following to help you with how to downgrade an app on iPhone or iPad. Check them now.
Method 1. Downgrade An App on iPhone/iPad with iTunes
If you have ever synced your iPhone/iPad with iTunes, luckily, you can find the previously synced IPA files on the computer. So you can replace the current version with it and get the mission of iOS app downgrading. And you need to make sure your iTunes version is earlier than 12.7. Since iTunes 12.7 update removes the built-in App Store browser, so iTunes does not support app management anymore.
And here are the detailed steps to downgrade an app on iPhone/iPad using iTunes 12.6 and earlier:
1. Locate the IPA File of the Previous Version.
By default, the previously synced IPA files would be saved on the computer:
On Mac: Go to /Users/<Username>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications;
On Windows: Go to C:Users<Username>MusiciTunesiTunes MediaMobile Applications.
Find the IPA files that you want and save them in a particular folder, which we will need them later.
2. Install the Previous IPA with iTunes
Step 1. Open iTunes on your computer > Go to My Apps, and there you will see all purchased and synced apps.
Step 2. Click on the app icon that you would like to downgrade > Choose Get Info and you will see the app version number. If the version number is just what you plan to downgrade to, please jump to Step 5.
Step 3. If the version number is not what you need, click on the app > Choose Show in Finder/Windows Explore > In the folder, delete the existing IPA file > Then the IPA file will be moved to the Trash/Recycle Bin, please delete it from there, too.
Step 4. Now go back to the Apps tab in iTunes, right click on the app and choose Show in Finder/Explorer again. At this time, iTunes will ask you to locate the IPA file > Choose Locate and browse to the folder which has saved your old IPA file.
Step 5. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer > Click on the device tab > Choose Apps option.
Step 6. Next to the particular app that you would like to downgrade, there will be a Remove button > Choose the Remove button and then click on Apply.
Step 7. After that, you will see an Install button next to the app > Choose the Install button > Click on Apply button, and iTunes will start syncing > Just wait for its finishing, and then your old version of the app will get back on your iPhone iPad.

For downgrading an iOS app, first you need to retrieve the IPA file of its previous version, which was downloaded earlier using your Apple ID. Once you get the IPA file, the following steps will guide you through the downgrade process.
Retrieve the old IPA file
If you have previously synced your iOS device using iTunes, it might be possible that the previous version of the app you are looking for is present on your computer. During iTunes sync, a copy of your installed iOS apps is saved to the /Users/<Username>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications location on Mac and C:Users<Username>MusiciTunesiTunes MediaMobile Applications location on Windows, by default, as .IPA files.
If you have synced your iOS device after updating the particular app, the IPA file on your computer might also have been updated. In such a case, you might find the old IPA in the Trash (Mac) or Recycle Bin (Windows).

Install the old IPA file using iTunes
The following steps will guide you to install a previous version of an iOS app from an old IPA file:
- Launch iTunes and go to the Apps >> My Apps. All your purchased and synced apps will be listed here.
- If the app you’re trying to install is present in the list, right click on the app icon and choose Get Info and verify the version number. If the version number matches with the one you are trying to install, proceed to Step (8), otherwise proceed to Step (5). And if the app is not available in the list, proceed to the next step.
- If the app you’re trying to install is not available in the list, first ensure that the app is installed on your iOS device. If not, get the latest version of the app from the App Store. Now connect your iOS device to your computer and sync with iTunes. The app should be available in the iTunes App List now.
- Right click on the app icon in iTunes and choose Show in Finder/Windows Explorer. Now proceed to Step (6).
- If the version of the app displayed in iTunes does not match your desired version, right click on the app icon in iTunes and choose Show in Finder/Windows Explorer.
- When the folder opens, delete the existing IPA file of the app from that location as well as from the Trash / Recycle Bin.
- Now go back to the Apps tab in iTunes, right click on the particular application and choose Show in Finder/Explorer. This time, iTunes will prompt you to locate the IPA file. Choose Locate and browse to the old IPA file that you have retrieved earlier.
- Connect your iOS device to your computer via USB, if not already connected.
- Select your device in iTunes and go to the Apps tab of the selected iOS device.
- If the app is already installed, you should see a Remove button next to the app in iTunes. Click on the Remove button and then click on Apply. Now you should see the Install button next to the particular app.
- Click on the Install button next to the particular app in the list.
- Click on Apply and let the syncing complete.
The old version of the app is now installed on your iOS device.
Install the old IPA using iFunBox
If you find the above steps confusing, an easier way to install an app from the IPA file is to use iFunBox. And you don’t need to jailbreak your iDevice for it.
- Download and install iFunBox on Mac or PC.
- Connect your iOS device to the computer via USB and wait for iFunBox to detect it.
